ULTRA SECURE TRANSACTIONS
We believe that RAIN RFID can begin to provide a viable alternative to NFC for transactions in some scenarios. Our dual far-field plus near-field antenna CB1 tags are a key enabler of this goal. Expect to see a seamless combination of passive services and contactless transactions being trialed at festivals & attractions over the next couple of years.

NOVEL ANTENNA APPLICATIONS
Moving 'beyond the inlay' to truly integrate RAIN tag antenna design with the form of the product that it is embedded within provides a rich landscape for experimentation. New manufacturing techniques combined with RF propagation modelling software and 3D printed prototypes continue to erode traditional barriers to innovation. Expect to see some new takes on everyday items over the coming 36 months.
MODULAR RFID TAGS
Today, an RFID inlay is an end product. For the most part it is what is and does no more or less than what it could on the day it left the converters factory. But tomorrow could be a different story. What if you could add battery assistance in the field? What if you could stick an MCU onto an existing credential? Why not add an IoT sensor after the fact? We believe this could be what RFID looks like tomorrow, so we're working to make it a reality today.
RF EMITTING COMMUNITIES OF THINGS
RFID is brilliant. But deploying the RFID reader and antenna infrastructure needed to leverage it can be a show stopper. How might we get around that problem? What opportunities might we create, what products might we enable, if we commercialised credentials that could communicate directly with one another as well as with Readers? Let's find out.
We suspect that ubiquitous RAIN RFID coverage might be achieved with smaller, less powerful Readers embedded within everyday objects and wearables. Miniaturisation of wireless RF components is not the problem, power is. The way we garner meaning from new, potentially mobile, reader systems also creates new challenges and opportunities. We believe that the combination of smaller, wireless, battery powered readers combined with edge AI and IoT will provide rich opportunities for product development & commercialisation.
GRAPHENE BATTERY & SUPER CAPACITOR APPLICATION
Graphene has incredible potential as a power source for RFID tags, things and miniaturised readers. It also has amazing applications for onboard computing on those products. 4id Edge has far reaching set of research goals that will move our products through graphene power, to graphene enabled compute and potentially to onboard quantum computing.
We believe that artificial intelligence (AI), also known as deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) holds the keys to unlocking true value from the data collected by internet of things (IoT) sensors. RAIN RFID is fundamental enabler of so many of those sensors. We predict that next generation systems that harness distributed AI across cloud, edge devices and, perhaps someday, credentials themselves, will be the successors of the RAIN arena.
