THE 4ID EDGE
4id Edge has it's own R&D projects as well as being contracted by others, like 4id Solutions, to undertake their R&D work.
Where possible, 4id Edge seeks to partner with complimentary skills and component suppliers to jointly invest in & commercialise productised solutions.
While we have a global mindset, we try to 'act local' wherever possible to increase local IP and to experience the benefits of in-person collaboration & community.
PRODUCTS & SERVICES
We design, make and resell a limited range of best-in-breed RAIN products & services that we guarantee will work together the way that we say they will.
Twice the range. Half the price. Thinner than skin.
The ingenious, patent pending, simplicity of projecting the inlay off the skin gives the AirWing wristband a reliable 4.2m read range when worn on the body. It's the perfect choice for hospitals, theme parks and music festivals looking to benefit from secure, passive location awareness of guests.
Incredible range against most substrates
Cost effective RAIN RFID labels that reliable provide 4m when adhered to items including glass, metal and wood. The secret is in the 'free air' created for the RFID inlays antenna by the wing.
CB1 & CB2 CREDENTIAL BADGES
Dual near & far field antenna RAIN tags
The most advanced PCBA based RAIN tag we know of!
Both CB1 & CB2 feature dedicated near field and far field antennas onboard that can be dynamically selected for separate use, or at the same time for increased performance. The top of the range Monza X-2k chip offers public and private modes using Impinj QT and as well as in memory token management.
CB2 builds on CB1 with battery assist as well as onboard micro controller unit (MCU) and dynamically controlled LED powered by the battery.
RAIN READERS & ANTENNAS
from Impinj and Times-7
We are proud to recommend and resell a discreet range Impinj and Times-7 RAIN hardware.
Our joint venture Things in Motion (TiM) services work with Impinj Readers able to run their Octane SDK.
COLLABORATIONS & JOINT VENTURES
THINGS IN MOTION (TIM)
Bringing SONOS like simplicity to long range RFID to help anyone go from unboxing to seeing tag reads in the cloud in under 5 minutes.
4id Edge has partnered with Gosford based AWS PaaS/SaaS experts OneBlink, formerly BlinkMobile, to Things in Motion - which we call TiM.
TiM launches in April 2018 with two simple services:
TagPipe - An AWS IoT and Greengrass enabled service to automatically setup Impinj readers and antennas & begin piping EPC reads to a near real time event bus in the cloud for your applications to consume from.
Timventory - A near real time count of the number of tags in front of a reader within the last 10 seconds, with configurable thresholds for green / amber / red stock level indication at a glance.
RAIN + IoT READERS

DEEP LEARNING COLLABORATORS WANTED!
RF enabled relative-location service for zero-infrastructure, ubiquitous RFID
We're looking for deep learning partners to assist in a new R&D program that aims to emulate some of the awesome work that Instacart has done in the retail space, in hospitals. If you're interested then let us know!
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
We believe that radio frequency identification and sensors have incredible latent potential to enable the personal & professional aspirations of millions of people around the world, if only the it was more accessible both technically & economically. Everything we do is focused on lowering the barriers to the application and adoption of RIoT technology. Our work is not targeted at early adopters, we're for everyone who's never had the chance.
Below are a handful of projects we'd love to share with you. We believe in open innovation. If anything piques your interest then let us know, there's every chance that we're open for collaboration.
ULTRA SECURE TRANSACTIONS
We believe that RAIN RFID can begin to provide a viable alternative to NFC for transactions in some scenarios. Our dual far-field plus near-field antenna CB1 tags are a key enabler of this goal. Expect to see a seamless combination of passive services and contactless transactions being trialed at festivals & attractions over the next couple of years.
Let us know if you have an event where you'd like to trial this concept!
NOVEL ANTENNA APPLICATIONS
Moving 'beyond the inlay' to truly integrate RAIN tag antenna design with the form of the product that it is embedded within provides a rich landscape for experimentation. New manufacturing techniques combined with RF propagation modelling software and 3D printed prototypes continue to erode traditional barriers to innovation. Expect to see some new takes on everyday items over the coming 36 months.
MODULAR RFID TAGS
Today, an RFID inlay is an end product. For the most part it is what is and does no more or less than what it could on the day it left the converters factory. But tomorrow could be a different story. What if you could add battery assistance in the field? What if you could stick an MCU onto an existing credential? Why not add an IoT sensor after the fact? We believe this could be what RFID looks like tomorrow, so we're working to make it a reality today.
RF EMITTING COMMUNITIES OF THINGS
RFID is brilliant. But deploying the RFID reader and antenna infrastructure needed to leverage it can be a show stopper. How might we get around that problem? What opportunities might we create, what products might we enable, if we commercialised credentials that could communicate directly with one another as well as with Readers? Let's find out.
We suspect that ubiquitous RAIN RFID coverage might be achieved with smaller, less powerful Readers embedded within everyday objects and wearables. Miniaturisation of wireless RF components is not the problem, power is. The way we garner meaning from new, potentially mobile, reader systems also creates new challenges and opportunities. We believe that the combination of smaller, wireless, battery powered readers combined with edge AI and IoT will provide rich opportunities for product development & commercialisation.
GRAPHENE BATTERY & SUPER CAPACITOR APPLICATION
Graphene has incredible potential as a power source for RFID tags, things and miniaturised readers. It also has amazing applications for onboard computing on those products. 4id Edge has far reaching set of research goals that will move our products through graphene power, to graphene enabled compute and potentially to onboard quantum computing.
We believe that artificial intelligence (AI), also known as deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) holds the keys to unlocking true value from the data collected by internet of things (IoT) sensors. RAIN RFID is fundamental enabler of so many of those sensors. We predict that next generation systems that harness distributed AI across cloud, edge devices and, perhaps someday, credentials themselves, will be the successors of the RAIN arena.
